Ohio

Ohio i/oʊˈhaɪ.oʊ/ is a state in the midwestern region of the United States. Ohio is the 34th largest by area, the 7th most populous, and the 10th most densely populated of the 50 United States. The state's capital and largest city is Columbus.

The state takes its name from the Ohio River. The name originated from the Iroquois word ohi-yo’, meaning "great river" or "large creek." Partitioned from the Northwest Territory, the state was admitted to the Union as the 17th state (and the first under the Northwest Ordinance) on March 1, 1803. Ohio is historically known as the "Buckeye State" (relating to the Ohio buckeye tree, and Ohioans are also known as "Buckeyes."

The government of Ohio is composed of the executive branch, led by the Governor; the legislative branch, which comprises the Ohio General Assembly; and the judicial branch, which is led by the state Supreme Court. Ohio occupies 16 seats in the United States House of Representatives. Ohio is known for its status as both a swing state and a bellwether in national elections. Six Presidents of the United States have been elected who had Ohio as their home state.

Ohio State University

The Ohio State University, commonly referred to as Ohio State or OSU, is a public research university in Columbus, Ohio. Founded in 1870, as a land-grant university and ninth university in Ohio with the Morrill Act of 1862, the university was originally known as the Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College. The college began with a focus on training students in various agricultural and mechanical disciplines but was developed into a comprehensive university under the direction of Governor Rutherford B. Hayes and in 1878 the Ohio General Assembly passed a law changing the name to "The Ohio State University". It has since grown into the third largest university campus in the United States. Along with its main campus in Columbus, Ohio State also operates a regional campus system with regional campuses in Lima, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, and Wooster.

The university is also home to an extensive student life program, with over 1,000 student organizations; intercollegiate, club and recreational sports programs; student media organizations and publications, fraternities and sororities; and three active student governments. Ohio State athletic teams compete in Division I (Football Bowl Subdivision for football) of the NCAA and are known as the Ohio State Buckeyes. The university is a member of the Big Ten Conference for the majority of sports. The Ohio State Buckeyes men's ice hockey program competes in the Big Ten Conference, while its women's hockey program competes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. In addition, the OSU men's volleyball team is a member of the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (MIVA). OSU is one of only fourteen universities in the nation that plays Division I FBS football and Division I ice hockey. Alumni and former students have gone on to prominent careers in government, business, science, medicine, education, sports, and entertainment.

University

A university (Latin: universitas, "a whole") is an institution of higher (or tertiary) education and research which grants academic degrees in various subjects and typically provides undergraduate education and postgraduate education. The word "university" is derived from the Latin universitas magistrorum et scholarium, which roughly means "community of teachers and scholars."

History

Definition

The original Latin word "universitas" refers in general to "a number of persons associated into one body, a society, company, community, guild, corporation, etc." At the time of the emergence of urban town life and medieval guilds, specialised "associations of students and teachers with collective legal rights usually guaranteed by charters issued by princes, prelates, or the towns in which they were located" came to be denominated by this general term. Like other guilds, they were self-regulating and determined the qualifications of their members.

In modern usage the word has come to mean "An institution of higher education offering tuition in mainly non-vocational subjects and typically having the power to confer degrees," with the earlier emphasis on its corporate organization considered as applying historically to Medieval universities.

State university system

A state university system in the United States is a group of public universities supported by an individual state, or a similar entity such as the District of Columbia. These systems constitute the majority of public-funded universities in the country. Each state supports at least one such system.

State university systems should not be confused with federally funded colleges and universities, at which attendance is limited to military personnel and government employees. Members of foreign militaries and governments also attend some schools. These schools include the United States military academies, Naval Postgraduate School, and military staff colleges.

A state university system normally means a single legal entity and administration, but may consist of several institutions, each with its own identity as a university. Some states—such as California and Texas—support more than one such system.

State universities get subsidies from their states. The amount of the subsidy varies from university to university and state to state, but the effect is to lower tuition costs below that of private universities for students from that state or district. As more and more Americans attend college, and private tuition rates increase well beyond the rate of inflation, admission to state universities is becoming more and more competitive.

Tuition payments

Tuition payments, usually known as tuition in American English and as tuition fees in Commonwealth English, are fees charged for instruction during higher education.

Tuition payments are charged by educational institutions in some countries to assist with funding of staff and faculty, course offerings, lab equipment, computer systems, libraries, facility upkeep and to provide a comfortable student learning experience. In most countries, especially non-English-speaking countries, there are no or only nominal tuition fees for all forms of education, including university and other higher education.

Payment methods

Some of the methods used to pay for tuition include:

  • Scholarship
  • Bursary
  • Company sponsorship and/or funding
  • Grant
  • Government loan
  • Educational loan (private)
  • Family (parental) money
  • Savings
  • By location

Countries such as Chile, the Netherlands, South Africa, the United States and the United Kingdom have “up-front tuition policies." These policies generally include a tuition fee that is large enough to give parents and/or guardians "a responsibility to cover some portion of their children’s higher education costs." This responsibility can make it difficult for a low-income student to attend college without requiring a grant or one or more loans.

      Ohio Tuition Hike - 46

      Ohio Tuition Hike - 46

      Ohio Tuition Hike - 46

This article about the college tuition points out how last year lawmakers limited colleges from raising tuition. College bound students will see a 2% - 3% percent increase every year compounded indefinitely. The increased prices will add between $200 - $300 dollars more every year or nearly $3000 every ten years. So in 10 years the maximum for a year of college will be around $13000 for in state tuition for Ohio students. Now this law tackling rising tuition does nothing about service fees charged to students to make up for the college bottom line. Nor does it put an extreme fix on the cost of textbooks by publishing companies. However, this college cost fixes nothing to change the way for profit diploma mills will attract students. It will not change the way girls from Miami University of Oxford, Ohio who believe they imitate the homeless when they wiped feces and urine all over the Cincinnati Freedom Center. Tuition hikes continue at Ohio's public colleges by Collin Binkley The Columbus Dispatch • Monday April 28, 2014 6:05 AM http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2014/04/28/tuition-pressure-strong-steady.html https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3YgIef1WZ0

Could or will on line education provide students with similar education at a fraction of the cost? Is it time to ask some hard questions about higher education? The liberal arts have come under particular scrutiny, at both community colleges and four-year universities, for failing to prepare graduates for employment. While there is evidence that earnings for liberal-arts graduates lag behind graduates in technical fields, surveys of employers find that many still want to hire students with skills that are central to the liberal arts. How can the liberal arts become more valuable for students and employers? How can community colleges and universities incorporate more skills-building opportunities into their programs? How can institutions fashion tighter connections between education and employment? Please join AEI and ...

Success in today’s global economy virtually requires a college or post graduate degree, but colleges and law schools have raised tuition enormously. The government subsidizes students to take huge loans to pay for college and law schools, loans which inflict an increasing burden on students, including law students, in a troubled economy. Do these loans pay as much for faculty research and administrators as for direct student education? Are faculties producing research that justifies these costs? Are students getting a good deal now? Could or will on line education provide students with similar education at a fraction of the cost? Is it time to ask some hard questions about higher education? Does education policy benefit average and below average students or does it merely benefit the top of the class? This panel will focus to a significant degree on law schools. The Federalist Society's Practice Groups presented this showcase panel on "Higher Education: Run for the Benefit of Students or Faculty or Administrators?" on Saturday, November 15, during the 2014 National Lawyers Convention. --Prof. Paul F. This year, there are over 125,000 students enrolled in Ohio’s Community Schools, more commonly referred to as Charter Schools, with almost a third of those enrolled in eSchools. Explaining the role of Charter Schools in Ohio was the topic of discussion at the CMC forum on Wednesday, November 11 featuring speakers Aaron Churchill, of the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation, Darlene Chambers, president & CEO for the Ohio Alliance for Public Charter Schools and Tony Gatto, principal of Arts & College Preparatory Academy. The forum will be moderated by Cathy Candisky, journalist with The Columbus Dispatch. According to the Ohio Department of Education, “Community schools are public nonprofit, nonsectarian schools that operate independently of any school district but under a contract with an authorized sponsoring entity that is established by statute or approved by the State Board of Education. Community schools are public schools of choice and are state and federally funded.” The state funding follows the student from his or her “home district” to the Charter School of choice. Whereas private schools receive no governmental funding and charge tuition, there is no tuition requirement for a Charter School. What’s the appeal for Charter Schools? Charter Schools were established when parents were fed up with low achieving and unsafe public schools. Families were seeking a better education and private schools were limited by unaffordable tuition, admission requirements or undesired religious instruction. Today, in addition to offering a public-school alternative, some Charter Schools offer special concentrations in the arts, STEM subjects, and special instruction for students with special needs. The success of individual Charter Schools, overall, has been uneven with some schools touting high achievement while other schools closing without notice with fiscal agents unable to explain how public funds were spent. Accountability for Ohio’s Charter Schools has been a focus of recent attention in terms of expenditures and student achievement reporting.

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was born on February 23, 1868, in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, to Alfred and Mary Silvina (née Burghardt) Du Bois. Mary Silvina Burghardt's family was part of the very small free black population of Great Barrington, having long owned land in the state; she was descended from Dutch, African and English ancestors. William Du Bois's maternal great-grandfather was Tom Burghardt, a slave (born in West Africa around 1730) who was held by the Dutch colonist Conraed Burghardt. Tom briefly served in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, which may have been how he gained his freedom. Tom's son Jack Burghardt was the father of Othello Burghardt, who was the father of Mary Silvina Burghardt. William Du Bois's paternal great-grandfather was an ethnic French-American, James Du Bois of Poughkeepsie, New York, who fathered several children with slave mistresses.[5] One of James' mixed-race sons was Alexander, who traveled to Haiti, and fathered a son, Alfred, with a mistress there. Alexander returned to Connecticut, leaving Alfred in Haiti with his mother.[6] Alfred moved to the United States sometime before 1860, and married Mary Silvina Burghardt on February 5, 1867, in Housatonic, Massachusetts.[6] Alfred left Mary in 1870, two years after William was born.[7] William's mother worked to support her family (receiving some assistance from her brother and neighbors), until she experienced a stroke in the early 1880s. She died in 1885.[8] Great Barrington's primarily European American community treated Du Bois generally well. He attended the local integrated public school and played with white schoolmates, though the racism he experienced even in this context would be one of the subjects of his later adult writing. Teachers encouraged his intellectual pursuits, and his rewarding experience with academic studies led him to believe that he could use his knowledge to empower African Americans.[9] When Du Bois decided to attend college, the congregation of his childhood church, the First Congregational Church of Great Barrington, donated money for his tuition. Relying on money donated by neighbors, Du Bois attended Fisk University, a historically black college in Nashville, Tennessee, from 1885 to 1888.[12] His travel to and residency in the South was Du Bois's first experience with Southern racism, which encompassed Jim Crow laws, bigotry, and lynchings.[13] After receiving a bachelor's degree from Fisk, he attended Harvard College (which did not accept course credits from Fisk) from 1888 to 1890, where he was strongly influenced by his professor William James, prominent in American philosophy.[14] Du Bois paid his way through three years at Harvard with money from summer jobs, an inheritance, scholarships, and loans from friends. In 1890, Harvard awarded Du Bois his second bachelor's degree, cum laude, in history.[15] In 1891, Du Bois received a scholarship to attend the sociology graduate school at Harvard.[16] In 1892, Du Bois received a fellowship from the John F. Slater Fund for the Education of Freedmen to attend the University of Berlin for graduate work.[17] While a student in Berlin, he traveled extensively throughout Europe. He came of age intellectually in the German capital, while studying with some of that nation's most prominent social scientists, including Gustav von Schmoller, Adolph Wagner and Heinrich von Treitschke.[18] After returning from Europe, Du Bois completed his graduate studies; in 1895 he was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University.[19] In the summer of 1894, Du Bois received several job offers, including one from the prestigious Tuskegee Institute; he accepted a teaching job at Wilberforce University in Ohio.[21] At Wilberforce, Du Bois was strongly influenced by Alexander Crummell, who believed that ideas and morals are necessary tools to effect social change.[22] While at Wilberforce, Du Bois married Nina Gomer, one of his students, on May 12, 1896.[23] After two years at Wilberforce, Du Bois accepted a one-year research job from the University of Pennsylvania as an "assistant in sociology" in the summer of 1896.[24] He performed sociological field research in Philadelphia's African-American neighborhoods, which formed the foundation for his landmark study, The Philadelphia Negro, published two years later while he was teaching at Atlanta University. It was the first case study of a black community. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/W._E._B._Du_Bois

http://www.youtube.com/user/StPetersburgCollege News Conference Regarding In-State Tuition for Children of Undocumented Immigrants. Clearwater, FL. — On Wednesday, February 26th, Senator Jack Latvala (R-Clearwater) and Representative Ed Hooper (R-Clearwater) held a news conference to address the issue of providing in-state tuition for children of undocumented immigrants. The news conference will took place at 11:00AM in the main auditorium of St. Petersburg College's Clearwater campus. About St. Petersburg College: In 1927, St. Petersburg College (then known as St. Petersburg Junior College) became Florida's first private, non-profit, two-year school of higher learning located in downtown St. Petersburg. Full accreditation followed in 1931 and in 1948 SPC became a public college. In June 2001, SPJC officially became St. Petersburg College when Florida's governor signed legislation making it the first community college in Florida to offer four-year degrees. On Dec. 11, 2001, the college received the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools' accreditation to offer courses leading to bachelor's degrees. In 2002, St. Petersburg College began offering courses leading to bachelor's degrees in Education, Nursing and Technology Management. The college's commitment to its two-year curriculum, which has earned it wide recognition and annually wins it high national rankings, remains as strong as ever. Today, SPC has ten learning sites throughout Pinellas County and recently became the first college in Florida to offer a four-year degree in Dental Hygiene. This program's offerings augment its two-year program, which has been in operation since 1963. SPC added four-year degrees in Veterinary Technology, Public Safety Administration and Orthotics and Prosthetics in 2005. College Accreditation St. Petersburg College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associates degrees and to offer courses leading to bachelor's degrees in the following areas: Banking, Nursing, Business Administration, Orthotics & Prosthetics, Elementary/Secondary Education, Paralegal Studies. Educational Studies. Post-Baccalaureate Teacher Certification. Dental Hygiene. Public Safety Administration. Health Services Administration. Sustainability Management. International Business. Technology Management. Management & Organizational Leadership. Veterinary Technology. SPC also offers access to junior and senior level courses for bachelors and graduate degrees at the University Partnership Center. The UPC partners with the University of South Florida, University of South Florida at St. Petersburg, Eckerd College, University of Florida, Florida State University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, University of Central Florida, Florida International University, Florida A&M University, Saint Leo University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Florida Institute of Technology, Barry University, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Indiana University, and St. Petersburg College.

The average student loan debt taken on by American college graduates hovers just below $30,000. Ohio is no exception to this statistic, with 68% of 2013 college graduates leaving school with loans on par with the national average. Increased tuition and scarce family resources characterize the difficulties of financing a college education in post-recession years. Community Colleges offer an alternative, affordable approach to higher education. With over 25,000 students representing every county in Ohio, Columbus State Community College is one of the largest Ohio Colleges. Dr. David Harrison, president of Columbus State Community College (CSCC), will be the featured speaker at the next CMC forum. He was appointed Columbus State President in July 2010. Under his leadership the College has focused on student success and attainment, workforce innovation, and civic engagement. A key goal for Columbus State is to increase the proportion of adults who have completed college degrees or certificate programs to 60% by 2025. One way Columbus State plans to meet this goal is through community partnerships. Relationships with Ohio universities allow students to begin studies at Columbus State before transferring to a four-year institution to obtain a bachelor’s degree. Columbus State also partners with local employers to create and sustain workforce education programs. Efforts also include initiatives to provide high school students college credit and pathways to technical certification programs. Across the board, Columbus State is leading the charge in affordably connecting people to jobs and degrees. The forum will be hosted by Jerry Revish, WBNS 10TV News anchor. Revish is an Emmy and award-winning reporter native of Youngstown, Ohio.

Rising tuition costs and an uneven economic recovery have left many recent college graduates underemployed and saddled with debt. Please join AEI and Burning Glass Technologies for a presentation of new research and a panel discussion featuring postsecondary leaders on bridging the divide between education and employment. The Excelsior Scholarship will make New York the first state to include four-year public schools in the free tuition program. Targeting middle-class families and individuals with incomes of $125,000 per year or less, the program has been hailed both as innovative or doomed to fail. Is this a move in the right direction? In this episode of Admissions Live, we speak with Joe D’Angelo, a Carl Marks Advisors’ Partner and an education industry and restructuring veteran.

This milestone for Ohio University is the result of several months of work by representatives of the University community to design a fully comprehensive cohort-based, level-rate tuition, housing, dining and most academic course and technology fees.
